A Silent Generation Speaks: Experience "Pull Up a Chair, A Seated Perspective" at the Goldman Art Gallery

Art has the power to tell stories, evoke emotions, and challenge perspectives. Pull Up a Chair, A Seated Perspective, an extraordinary exhibition currently on display at the Goldman Art Gallery in Rockville, MD, does just that. This show brings together 13 visual artists, including curator and artist Sandra D. Davis, who have transformed chairs into thought-provoking statements addressing themes such as social and political issues, gender, ableism, spirituality, grief, anxiety, personal challenges, medication management, therapy, hardships, housing, and financial struggles.

Antionette Simmons Hodges' Contribution: "A Silent Generation Speaks"

One of the standout pieces in this exhibition is Antionette Simmons Hodges' decorated chair, titled "A Silent Generation Speaks." This piece pays homage to the Silent Generation—those born between 1928 and 1945—who grew up during times of war and economic hardship. Often described as hardworking, disciplined, and reluctant to speak out, this generation played a crucial role in shaping modern society, yet their voices are sometimes overlooked.

Through intricate storytelling and visual elements, Antionette’s chair captures personal and historical narratives, highlighting the resilience, values, and cultural experiences of this generation. Her work invites viewers to reflect on their own connections to the past and the lessons learned from those who came before us.

Although Antionette was unable to attend the opening reception due to being on a cruise and is currently in Grand Turk, she extends her gratitude to everyone who supported the event. A special thanks goes to Brykyta for attending on her behalf and capturing beautiful photographs of the exhibition.
