Antionette Simmons Hodges was in the audience at the Kennedy Center when Dance Theater of Harlem performed Geoffrey Holder's "Dance of the Dougla"—and she never forgot it. Three figures in sweeping geometric robes, bold circles of red, white, and blue against deep black fabric, moving in synchronized waves across a cobalt sky and ochre earth. She painted it from memory and feeling.
The Dougla people of Trinidad and Tobago are of African and South Asian descent—a community born from the intersections of diaspora, culture, and spirit. Geoffrey Holder's choreography honored their heritage through movement. This painting honors the painting that honored them. It's a tote bag carrying three layers of legacy.
The Artist:
Antionette Simmons Hodges is a Black mixed-media artist whose work spans African heritage, Caribbean culture, and the rich cross-cultural stories that shape Black diasporic identity. With over 30 years of artistic practice, she brings personal witness and reverence to every piece. "Dance of the Dougla" is rooted in her direct experience of witnessing this transformative performance.
About the Print:
The original artwork was painted on canvas in bold, flat geometric forms—an homage to the sharp theatrical design of Geoffrey Holder's robes and the architectural quality of the choreography itself. The piece was professionally scanned and printed onto this tote using dye sublimation, embedding the deep cobalt, saturated red, and luminous white directly into the polyester fibers. The colors are permanent and vivid—no cracking, no peeling, no fading with regular use.
Construction & Materials:
These custom-printed tote bags are built for everyday use and long-term durability. The 100% spun polyester body uses a tight micro-grid weave that holds its shape, dries quickly, and won't pill or fray with regular use. Your all-over print is created with dye sublimation—meaning the artwork is embedded directly into the fabric fibers, not printed on top. Colors won't crack, peel, or flake.
Care Instructions:
Spot clean only. Pretreat stains with gentle remover and soft brush using circular motions. Rinse thoroughly and air dry completely. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, bleach, or iron directly on printed surface.
Styling Notes:
The cobalt blue and deep earthy ochre pair beautifully with navy, rust, cream, or white. A natural statement bag for Caribbean fashion lovers, dance enthusiasts, and anyone who carries culture with intention. Photographs powerfully in open light—the geometric boldness holds at any distance.
Gift-Ready For:
Caribbean Heritage Month, dance recitals and performances, Trinidadian or Tobagonian heritage celebrations, Juneteenth, multicultural arts events, gifts for dancers, choreographers, Dance Theater of Harlem fans, or anyone whose roots cross more than one ocean.
Our tote bags are crafted from premium 100% polyester synthetic fabric designed for everyday durability without compromising on style. The medium-weight 6.49 oz/yd² (200 g/m²) fabric offers a structured yet soft drape that maintains its shape through daily wear, while the quick-drying properties make it practical for any weather. Each tote features extremely strong, durable synthetic fabric with reinforced construction including boxed corners and double-row stitching that creates extra room and superior seam strength for heavy loads and frequent use. The seamless thread color integration provides a crisp, polished appearance with matching black inner stitching, complemented by long black straps measuring 28.74" in length and 1" in width for comfortable shoulder carry. With generous dimensions of 18" × 18" × 3", these totes offer ample space for your essentials while displaying vibrant, high-quality printed artwork that preserves every detail of the design, and the solid color back provides a clean, versatile look that complements any style.
To keep your tote looking vibrant and performing its best, spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent for minor stains, or hand wash in cold water when full cleaning is needed. Do not machine wash, as the synthetic fabric and construction details are best preserved through gentle cleaning, and always air dry by laying flat or hanging to dry without using a tumble dryer—the quick-drying fabric makes this process easy. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to maintain artwork and color vibrancy, and never bleach or use harsh chemicals that could damage the material. When ironing is necessary, do not apply heat directly to the printed artwork; instead, iron inside-out on low heat only, and store the tote in a cool, dry place when not in use. With proper care, your polyester tote will retain its shape, color, and strength for years of everyday use—from running errands and traveling to making an artistic statement wherever you go.
