About the Artwork
"Dressed to Reign – Four Guys" began with an old photograph. A friend shared a picture of his brother and three buddies — what Antionette and her college friends called "block boys," guys from D.C. with a dress style all their own, unlike the men on campus from New York, Chicago, or Detroit. The image stuck with her for years. Eventually it became this painting: four Black men in their finest — fedoras, sharp suits, quiet confidence — rendered in expressive brushwork against a vivid blue background. This is Black dandyism as fine art. Brotherhood as portraiture. Style as power.

Antionette Simmons Hodges is a celebrated artist whose vibrant, culturally rich work draws from rural life, jazz, and family. After 30 years in art education, she now paints full-time. An active member of Black Artists of D.C., her work has been exhibited globally and explores the depth and beauty of Black culture and identity.
