Wearable Art for the Bold and the Blessed
Antionette Simmons Hodges painted Annabelle in 1995—a profile portrait of a dark-skinned Black woman lifting her face skyward beneath a wide orange hat crowned with a single white daisy. The vivid lime green ground makes her glow. The yellow top grounds her warmth. The closed eyes say she already knows she looks magnificent.
Church hat culture is a tradition of power, style, and sacred self-expression in African American communities. Annabelle embodies it completely. This is the painting that started the artist's business—and it hasn't stopped turning heads since.
The Artist:
Antionette Simmons Hodges is a Black mixed-media artist whose work celebrates African American women across their full spectrum of beauty, spirit, and cultural identity. "Annabelle's New Hat" is the foundational piece of her artistic journey—painted in bold, flat acrylic shapes honoring the modernist tradition of stylized portraiture while centering Black female elegance. It is, in her words, a love letter to every woman who ever put on a hat and became someone.
About the Print:
The original artwork was painted in 1995 on canvas using acrylic paints in vivid, saturated flat shapes. The bold lime green background, the rich orange hat, and Annabelle's deep chocolate-brown skin tones were rendered with deliberate minimalism. The piece was professionally scanned and printed onto this tote using dye sublimation—fusing the artwork directly into the polyester fibers for colors that are rich, permanent, and built to last. No cracking, no peeling, no fading with normal use.
Construction & Materials:
These custom-printed tote bags are built for everyday use and long-term durability. The 100% spun polyester body uses a tight micro-grid weave that holds its shape, dries quickly, and won't pill or fray with regular use. Your all-over print is created with dye sublimation—meaning the artwork is embedded directly into the fabric fibers, not printed on top. Colors won't crack, peel, or flake.
- 100% spun polyester body — 6.49 oz/yd² (200 g/m²) medium-weight fabric with subtle satin-like sheen

- Dye sublimation all-over printing — artwork fully embedded into fibers for vibrant, permanent color
- Non-woven laminate interior lining — structured, cleanable, high-end finish inside and out

- Body dimensions: 18" × 18" × 3" — structured, spacious, and shoulder-ready
Care Instructions:
Spot clean only. Pretreat stains with gentle remover and soft brush using circular motions. Rinse thoroughly and air dry completely. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, bleach, or iron directly on printed surface.
Styling Notes:
This bag is a maximalist's best friend and a minimalist's most interesting risk. Let the lime green sing against black or white tailoring, or pair with warm citrus tones for a full-spectrum statement. Photographs brilliantly in natural light—the orange and green pop against almost any setting.
Gift-Ready For:
Mother's Day, church anniversaries, Women's History Month, pastor appreciation, Black girl magic celebrations, Juneteenth, Kwanzaa, or any occasion that calls for honoring a woman who shows up fully dressed and fully herself.
