Antionette Simmons Hodges was in the audience at the Kennedy Center when Dance Theater of Harlem performed Geoffrey Holder's "Dance of the Dougla"—and she never forgot it. Three figures in sweeping geometric robes, bold circles of red, white, and blue against deep black fabric, moving in synchronized waves across a cobalt sky and ochre earth. She painted it from memory and feeling.
The Dougla people of Trinidad and Tobago are of African and South Asian descent—a community born from the intersections of diaspora, culture, and spirit. Geoffrey Holder's choreography honored their heritage through movement. This painting honors the painting that honored them. It's a tote bag carrying three layers of legacy.
The Artist:
Antionette Simmons Hodges is a Black mixed-media artist whose work spans African heritage, Caribbean culture, and the rich cross-cultural stories that shape Black diasporic identity. With over 30 years of artistic practice, she brings personal witness and reverence to every piece. "Dance of the Dougla" is rooted in her direct experience of witnessing this transformative performance.
About the Print:
The original artwork was painted on canvas in bold, flat geometric forms—an homage to the sharp theatrical design of Geoffrey Holder's robes and the architectural quality of the choreography itself. The piece was professionally scanned and printed onto this tote using dye sublimation, embedding the deep cobalt, saturated red, and luminous white directly into the polyester fibers. The colors are permanent and vivid—no cracking, no peeling, no fading with regular use.
