"A Dahomey Warrior" is the African warrior art print that honors one of history's most remarkable and under-recognized military forces—the women warriors of the Kingdom of Dahomey, known to Europeans as the "Dahomey Amazons" and to themselves as the Agojie, who for nearly two centuries served as the elite royal guard and frontline military corps of the West African kingdom. Antionette Simmons Hodges renders this warrior in a mixed-media collage that honors her power and dignity with the visual richness the subject demands.
The Agojie were among the most disciplined and feared military forces in West Africa—women who had chosen or been chosen for service, who trained relentlessly and fought with extraordinary effectiveness, who embodied a form of female power that European colonialism tried to erase and history is slowly restoring. Hodges approaches this subject with the reverence of an artist who understands what it means to honor women whose strength has been obscured. Prints that are 8×10 inches or smaller are shipped flat in sturdy cardboard stay-flat envelopes. Larger prints are carefully rolled and packaged in kraft mailing tubes to ensure safe delivery. Every order includes a tracking number.
Framed fine art prints are carefully packed using protective corner guards and wrapped securely to prevent damage in transit. We use a spidering method to suspend the frame within the box, ensuring it stays centered and protected. Production time is 3–4 business days.
Stretched canvas prints are made to order and carefully packaged to ensure safe delivery, shipped in a protective box via FedEx or USPS. Orders typically ship within 3–4 business days.
