Nyanda Art Print | African American Mixed-Media Batik Wall Decor

This African woman art print portrays a striking profile portrait built from hand-painted acrylic and hand-collaged batik fabric, celebrating the beauty and quiet strength of African womanhood.
"Nyanda" by Antionette Simmons Hodges takes its name from a dear friend, Nancy Panda, a woman from Sierra Leone who lives in the artist's building — a small, personal act of naming that carries the spirit of connection across cultures at the heart of the piece. Created in 2025, the painting depicts an African woman in profile, her head wrapped in a vivid batik headwrap of purple, moss green, and gold. Rather than paint the pattern, the artist cut and collaged real pieces of batik cloth directly onto the canvas to build the headwrap and the fabric draped over her shoulder, letting the cloth's authentic weave and dye-crackle texture do the work paint alone couldn't. Strands of gold Christmas ribbon are woven into the collage, catching the light along the folds of the wrap. The background is built from loose, textured brushwork in gold, green, and blue over a woven canvas ground, echoing the same handmade warmth as the collaged fabric.
Its warm gold, deep purple, and mossy green palette brings richness and dimension to a living room, entryway, reading nook, or bedroom — anywhere a piece rewards a closer look at its layered, tactile surface.
