About the Artwork
There is a version of Billie Holiday the world tried to give us — tragic, fragile, doomed. This tee rejects that version entirely. The Art Deco design frames her in gold — ornate, regal, commanding — the way you frame something you know is priceless. A vivid blue painted portrait sits at the center, surrounded by geometric grandeur. Lady Day as icon. As monument. As she actually was.
Antionette Simmons Hodges painted this as an act of reclamation. The Art Deco frame is not decoration — it's a statement about where Billie Holiday belongs in the cultural canon: at the top, surrounded by gold, undeniable.

Antionette Simmons Hodges is a celebrated artist whose vibrant, culturally rich work draws from rural life, jazz, and family. After 30 years in art education, she now paints full-time. An active member of Black Artists of D.C., her work has been exhibited globally and explores the depth and beauty of Black culture and identity.
